What is a Message Segment in Twilio?

A message segment is a unit of measurement used to calculate the length and cost of SMS/MMS messages. Since SMS is built on older telecom standards, carriers split text messages into chunks when they exceed certain character limits. Twilio passes along those carrier rules.

  • Standard SMS (GSM-7 encoding):
    Up to 160 characters = 1 segment.
    Longer texts are split into 153-character segments and stitched back together on the recipient’s phone.
    Example: A 300-character message = 2 segments.

  • Unicode SMS (non-GSM, emojis, special characters, etc.):
    Up to 70 characters = 1 segment.
    Longer texts are split into 67-character segments.
    Example: A 150-character Unicode message = 3 segments.

  • MMS messages (with pictures, videos, or rich media) aren’t segmented in the same way, but are billed differently.


Why Does This Matter?

  • Billing: Each segment counts as a billable message unit. So a long SMS may cost 2–3 times the price of a single one.

  • Delivery: Segments ensure your long messages arrive in full. Twilio automatically reassembles them for the end user.

  • Encoding: Using emojis, special characters, or non-Latin scripts (like Chinese, Arabic) can reduce the character limit per segment.


Example

  • Sending “Hello, this is a test” = 1 segment (21 GSM characters).

  • Sending a 320-character update = 3 segments.

  • Sending “🎉 Big news coming soon!” (with emoji) = may switch to Unicode encoding, lowering the limit to 70 chars per segment.
